Salem Cycle To Shutter Washington Street Location

Owner Dan Shuman said the Salem location will close with all services being transferred to the Marblehead Cycle location on Bessom Street.

SALEM, MA — Salem Cycle ownership is having what it is terming a "consolidation sale" as it prepares to close its Washington Street location in Salem and transfer all sales and services to the Marblehead Cycle location on Bessom Street.

The final day open in Salem is Saturday.

"This has been a hard decision to make," Salem Cycle owner Dan Shuman said in a letter to customers posted on social media. "I purchased Salem Cycle when I was 25, from my boss who I started working for when I was 14. Twenty years, later I purchased Marblehead Cycle from him and I have come full circle."

Shuman said he has "seen sales and foot traffic continue to dwindle here in Salem."

He blamed the downturn on "lack of parking, COVID, and much more."

Shuman said that while the Salem location has struggled, the Marblehead location has thrived, and he is currently "short-staffed and super busy" in Marblehead.

"It makes sense to close Salem," he said, "But it is hard."

Shuman said that he hopes to return to Salem soon either with a mobile service or a storefront.

The Salem location is open from noon to 7 p.m. on Thursday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. for the final two days on Friday and Saturday.

Shuman said after Saturday, the Salem location will be open by appointment only for pickups and repairs, and that bikes on layaway will be transferred to the Marblehead Cycle location.
