Salem To Dedicate Veterans Square In Memory Of D-Day Infantryman

U.S. Army Private First Class William "Willie" Soboczinski Square will be formally dedicated on Nov. 11.

SALEM, MA — The corner of Daniels Street and Daniels Street Court will be formally dedicated as William "Willie" Soboczinski Square on Nov. 11 in honor of the U.S. Army Private First Class who gave his life for his country in World War II.

The dedication will take place at 11 a.m. on Veterans Day.

Soboczinki was born and raised in the Pickering Wharf area of Salem and served as a U.S. Army infantryman during the D-Day invasion of Normandy Beach on June 6, 1944. He was killed in action five months later during the battle of Metz.

He is buried at the Lorraine American Cemetery in France.

The Massachusetts Medal of Liberty will be presented to members of PFC Soboczinski’s family during the ceremony.
