Salem Stops Twitter/X Account Use For Public Alerts, Updates

The city said municipal information will be shared on social media via Facebook, Instagram, Threads, Bluesky, and/or Nextdoor.

SALEM, MA — The city of Salem is the latest municipality, school department or social services organization to discontinue the use of X/Twitter as a means to disseminate alerts and other public information.

The city said on Monday that because of "ever-decreasing engagement" with the city of Salem account by the public, the social media account will "no longer be considered current and will not be regularly maintained" as of that day.

The city advised residents to follow the city activities on Facebook, Instagram, Threads, Bluesky and/or Nextdoor.

The city's Twitter/X account had 4,151 followers as of the Monday announcement. The Facebook page had 17,000 followers and the Instagram page 7,227 followers. The city's Bluesky page had just 359 followers as of Monday.
