Salem Election 2019: Here's Who's Running
The deadline to submit nomination papers has passed, and Salem will have several contested races this fall.
SALEM, MA — Salem will have several contested races in this fall's election, including a 11-way race for four at-large seats on City Council and an seven-way race for three school committee seats. There will also be contested races for City Council in five of Salem's seven wards, with only Ward Two Councilor Christine Madore and Ward Five Councilor Josh Turiel running unopposed for reelection. Candidates had until five p.m. Tuesday to return nomination papers to have their names included on the ballot.
With lots of candidates jumping in the race after Ward Three Councilor Lisa Peterson and Ward Six Councilor Beth Gerard said they not running for reelection, there will be a preliminary election to pare the field of candidates prior to the November election. There will also be a citywide preliminary election for school committee and the at-large seats on City Council.
The preliminary election is on Sept. 17, and the last day to register to vote in the preliminary election is Aug. 28. The preliminary election will thin the field of at-large city councilor candidates to eight and the field of school committee candidates to six. The number of candidates in the Ward 3 and 6 city council races will be cut down to two candidates in the preliminary election.
