Heritage Days on Friday includes Kids Night on the Common plus two new events - poetry writing workshop and book binding workshop.

The eighth day of the Salem Heritage Days on Friday, Aug. 8 includes a poetry writing workshop on Artists’ Row and Kids Night on Salem Common. Here’s the schedule for Friday:
Poetry-Writing Workshop; noon - 2 p.m.

Shelter to Showpiece Tour; 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m.
Peabody Essex Museum
Come tour the historic houses at the Peabody Essex Museum and experience three centuries of extraordinary New England architecture, set in Federal-style gardens, that is found within one city block next to the museum. The tour free with museum admission to out-of-town patrons and admission and the tour are free to Salem residents. Space is limited and is based on first come, first serve. Everyone must check in at the admission desk before the tour.

Book-Binding Workshop; 6-8 p.m.
Artists’ Row, 24 New Derby St.
In early Greek times, the scroll was often folded accordion-style to fit into the hand and access information more readily. Come visit Salem Collective of Artists and Musicians where local artist, Cary Chandler, will be hosting a free accordion book-binding workshop. “Huzzah for History!”; 10 a.m.-7 p.m.
The House of the Seven Gables, 115 Derby St.
Come by the spectacular house made famous by Nathaniel Hawthorne, and venture back into Salem’s maritime history! Families can pick up a Navigation Packet at the visitor center, which includes a ship’s log and compass, and begin their voyage of discovery navigating around the museum grounds! The Navigation Packet is available all day during Heritage Days and is included as part of the general admission price: $12.50 for adults, $11.50 for seniors age 65 and up and $7.50 for ages 5-12.
Family Activities; noon - 2 p.m.

Each day, experience several unique activities at the House of the Seven Gables as you step back into early New England and learn about Lacemaking, Storytelling: Caribbean Connections Bi-Lingual Tales, Skills with a Quill and Colonial Toys and Games. Call 978-744-0991 for more details. Programs are included in the cost of admission: $12.50 for adults, $11.50 for seniors age 65 and up and $7.50 for ages 5-12.
Kids Night; 5-7:30 p.m.
Salem Common
The Salem YMCA will transform the Salem Common into a paradise for children with moon bounces, rides, games and arts and crafts. Cost: $3 per child for unlimited rides. For more information call the Salem YMCA at 978-744-0351.
