Salem Partnership Hosts Sexual Assault Awareness Month Ceremony
Engaging New Voices is the theme, focusing on new voices speaking out against sexual assault, how they can begin to prevent such violence.

From Salem State University: WHAT: Salem State University, the city of Salem and the YWCA North Shore Rape Crisis Center have partnered to host the second annual Sexual Assault Awareness Month Proclamation ceremony with Mayor Kimberley Driscoll. The program will include a Proclamation read by Mayor Driscoll and remarks from Salem State President Patricia Maguire Meservey, as well as local religious and civic leaders. The proclamation will be followed by a fair in which community organizations share information about their work. The event is open to the media and public.

WHY: Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM) officially began in 2001, though movements against such violence began in the 1970s. Every year, SAAM focuses on a central theme, with this year’s theme being “Engaging New Voices.” The campaign focuses on new voices speaking out against sexual assault and how they can begin to prevent such violence. YWCA North Shore Rape Crisis Center works throughout the year to promote the prevention of sexual assault and to empower victims.
