Salem Power Outage Forces School Early Dismissal Thursday

The power outage affected Salem Prep High School and New Liberty Innovation School.

SALEM, MA — Two Salem schools needed to be dismissed early on Thursday because of a power outage.

Salem Public Schools said the outage affected Salem Prep and New Liberty School.

The district said at about 11 a.m. that "both schools have adjusted and will remain in session" but that decision was soon reversed after it was learned the outage would continue beyond the school day.

"We are concerned that it is too dark throughout the spaces for school to continue safely for the remainder of the day," school officials said.

Early dismissal began at 12:30 p.m. with buses arriving by 12:45.
