SALEM, MA — A planned National Grid power outage scheduled for Salem on Thursday night was postponed until spring after crews encountered an issue when they arrived to do the scheduled work.

The work, which was originally set for Wednesday night and then postponed to Thursday because of the weather, was set to put some residents in the dark for hours on one of the coldest nights of the year. But National Grid crews said when they arrived to perform the necessary work, "they identified unforeseen field conditions that could have resulted in a more widespread power outage than expected."

National Grid then decided to halt the work and reschedule it for some time this spring — when presumably it will be warmer.
