Best Pizza of Seekonk Brings 30-Plus Years of Experience
Dennis Hashway shares his story of coming from his first job in the restaurant business to owning his own.
Dennis Hashway, owner of Best Pizza of Seekonk for more than 20 years, started in the pizza business when he was just 16 in Cumberland, R.I.
“I just love the business,” he said. “I worked in the business and with the people and I just fell in love.”
Hashway said he first started while working for the Cumberland House of Pizza in 1976 and various other pizza places in Smithfield and Gloucester, but always wanted to do something more.

“I always had a dream of opening my own place,” he said. “I looked to buy one from someone else, but the places were always a mess. They always wanted more money than they were worth.”
Hashway said he started his plan while working in Rhode Island, both in pizza places.

“I had all my own recipes already,” he said. “I always kind of tweak it, you know hey that’s not a bad idea let’s see what happens. You can see the difference in the product right away and either you run with it or you don’t.”
Hashway said this can be a minute detail that one would think wouldn’t really affect the final outcome of a pizza. He said, for example, that he wanted to try moving away from his traditional blended oil for the pizza dough and try other types. He said he went through three or four types of oil before he found the one that worked best.
“And boom, it was like night and day,” he said. “It made the dough consistent, and very light and crispy.”
He added the quality of the cheese is also very important.
“If the cheese if fatty and greasy it can wreck the whole pizza,” he said. “I use lower fat cheese, so you don’t that big pool of grease on top.”
Hashway said his favorite type of topping would have to be linguica.
“Linguica and hot peppers, people die when they have it,” he said. “It’s slamming.”
Hashway said he sponsors youth softball and baseball in Seekonk and said he really loves the town.
“Opened up in 1990 and moved here in 1992,” he said. “I love it. It’s a nice small town, it really reminds me of Cumberland.”
