Local Pottery Studio Turns 45

Potters Place, a local nonprofit pottery studio, celebrates 45 years.

45 years ago, Henriette Dresens decided she wanted to share her love of pottery with others. “The first time I touched clay, I knew I could do this for the rest of my life.” And just like that, Potters Place was born.

Since its early days in Norwood, Potters Place (originally called Potters Wiel) has had several homes in Norwood, Walpole, and currently in Sharon. It has grown into a vibrant cooperative with 29 members, multiple classes with hundreds of students, and ongoing pottery sales. The twice a year Show & Sale showcases the work of member artists and raises a donation for a local charity. The next sale will be May 2-4th, just before Mother’s Day.

The Potters Place community has seen many changes over its 45 years – both in location and expansion of pottery opportunities. Members and students come from towns in the area surrounding Sharon. Customers from all over the world purchase our pottery.

As we celebrate our 45th anniversary, our current President, Sandy Smith of Franklin, noted “Potters Place has never lost Henriette’s vision to give members & students the opportunity to experience working with clay in an educational environment that is creative and supportive.”

Studio activities this year will celebrate Henriette’s 1980 vision. And we’re thrilled that she can celebrate with us at 92 years old! As Henriette says, “making art keeps you young!”
