Stop & Shop Rewards Shoppers With Gross Animal Cruelty

Stop & Shop is using eggs from hens kept in cramped, filthy cages as a sales incentive instead of prioritizing its cage-free pledge.

Nearly a decade ago, Stop & Shop’s parent company, Ahold Delhaize, made a public promise to go 100% cage-free by 2025.

It’s now 2025, and that promise remains unfulfilled. Worse, Stop & Shop has been actively promoting the very eggs it pledged to move away from.

Recently, the company launched a promotion offering customers a free dozen eggs with a $100 purchase, but it excluded cage-free eggs at stores in Connecticut, Rhode Island, New Jersey, and New York. In effect, eggs from hens kept in cramped, filthy cages are being used as a sales incentive. Disgusting.

It’s not the first time a grocery chain with a cage-free pledge has made ethical choices harder for price-conscious shoppers. Caged eggs are often used as “loss leaders”—sold below cost to lure customers in. If Stop & Shop were serious about its commitment, it would (at the very least) shift these incentives to cage-free eggs.

As a longtime resident of the Boston area, where Stop & Shop has a significant presence in the community, I find this deeply disappointing. It’s clear the company isn’t serious about animal welfare. If it were, it wouldn’t be using caged eggs as a marketing tactic in 2025.

In a recent article about Stop & Shop's egg promotion, the External Communication Manager, Daniel Wolk, noted the company has "plenty of eggs, ready for everyone." But just last week, Ahold Delhaize claimed an egg shortage was to blame for its lack of progress.

This isn’t just corporate irresponsibility — it’s flat-out deception.

Stop & Shop and Ahold Delhaize must follow through on their cage-free commitment. Consumers deserve honesty. And animals deserve better.
