SHREWSBURY, MA — Shrewsbury on Thursday warned residents to stay away from two water facilities due to high levels of E. Coli bacteria.

The elevated E. Coli levels were detected at Jordan Pond and the Oak Island boat ramp, which allows access to Flint Pond — the body of water south of Route 20 at the bottom of Lake Quinsigamond.

"Town officials encourage individuals and their pets to avoid contact with both bodies of water, including fishing, until further notice," the town said in a bulletin Thursday.

E. Coli bacteria can cause sickness that includes nausea, headaches and diarrhea. In severe cases, E. Coli can cause kidney infections that can sometimes be fatal.

The town will continue to test the water at both locations throughout the summer.
