High E.Coli Shuts Shrewsbury Beach
A second body of water in Shrewsbury also high bacteria levels, prompting a health warning.

SHREWSBURY, MA — A beach along Lake Quinsigamond in Shrewsbury is closed to swimmers due to high bacteria levels, according to the town.
Sunset Beach, 64 Old Faith Road, has high levels of E.coli bacteria, according to the Shrewsbury Board of Health. E. coli can cause severe stomach cramps and diarrhea when ingested, and some people develop a potentially fatal kidney infection called hemolytic uremic syndrome.
The town has also issued a second warning about the pond at Dean Park, which also has elevated bacteria levels. Although not used for swimming, residents should keep pets and children away from the water to avoid potential illness.

Water testing in Shrewsbury is conducted regularly throughout the year, and at swimming areas in the summer, by the board of health and the Worcester Division of Public Health. The town will let residents know when bacteria levels have dropped to less hazardous levels.
