Cops: Man Arrested After Fleeing, Throwing Gun

Shrewsbury police made a motor vehicle stop New Year's Eve that yielded a weapons arrest.

On New Year's Eve, Officer John Pitro stopped a vehicle in the area of 537 Hartford Tpke.; the stop led to a chase and a firearms arrest of a Worcester man.

Pitro approached a 1999 Ford Taurus for multiple motor vehicle infractions at about 9:45 p.m. Saturday. The driver drove away while Pitro was approaching, according to police.

Pitro pursued the Taurus, which crashed in the vicinity of 759 Hartford Tpke (Rt. 20 and South Street.) The two occupants then fled on foot. Pitro and Det. Timothy Finacom chased the suspects and at one point saw one suspect toss away a handgun.

The officers apprehended one of the suspects in the woods and identified him as Akeem L. Rose, 27, of 5 Jaques Ave., Worcester.

Another handgun was found inside the Taurus and Shrewsbury Police continued to search for the other suspect for several hours along with assistance of a K-9 unit.

The second suspect eluded police, said the report.

Rose was charged with carrying a dangerous weapon (two counts), possession of a firearm without a license (two counts), possession of a firearm with ammunition (two counts), possession of a firearm large capacity, receiving stolen property over $250 and resisting arrest.

Rose is being held at the Shrewsbury Police Department without bail. He will be arraigned at Westborough District Court Tuesday.
