Long Awaited Market Basket In Shrewsbury Opening This Week

SHREWSBURY, MA — Market Basket's move into the Worcester area will be complete this week.

The new Shrewsbury Market Basket location along Route 20 will open on Friday, according to reports. This will be the closest store to Worcester, although Market Basket has locations nearby in Oxford, Hudson, Leominster and Fitchburg.

The Shrewsbury Market Basket will anchor the new Edgemere Crossing development, which will also include 250 units of housing, a Starbucks and a bank. The development is located at 200 Hartford Turnpike (Route 20).

The Edgemere project got underway almost four years ago on the site of the former drive-in, which was vacant for nearly 20 years. The Tewksbury-based grocery chain paid $3.1 million for its Route 20 site.

Market Basket began hiring for the store in September, but supply chain issues apparently delayed the opening.

The Shrewsbury Market Basket will include the traditional thrifty shopping experience, plus an attached liquor store offering beer, wine and spirits. After the opening Friday, the Shrewsbury Market Basket will operate Mondays to Saturdays 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sundays 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.
