Another Candidate Joins Somerville Mayoral Race
Jason Mackey announced his candidacy Friday.

SOMERVILLE, MA — Jason Mackey officially announced he is running for mayor in the 2025 city election.
The resident currently works as a mentor for Staratout, a civics organization that aims to economically empower the LGBTQ+ community. Mackey describes himself as an advocate for equity and inclusion.
“As a Black gay man, he has worked to break down barriers and create opportunities—values he’ll bring to the Mayor’s Office to ensure Somerville remains a city where everyone has the chance to thrive,” Mackey’s campaign announcement reads.

Mackey’s goals if elected include making housing more affordable, empowering small businesses, improving public safety by increasing staffing to organizations like the police and mental health services, and protecting Somerville’s status as a sanctuary city.
Mackey joins City Councilors-At-Large Jake Wilson and Willie Burnley Jr. in the mayoral race. Katjana Ballantyne is currently serving her second two-year term as Mayor of Somerville.

“The City Council isn’t a training ground for mayor. Somerville can’t afford on-the- job learning,” Mackey said. “We need leadership that knows how to cut through red tape and make real progress."
