Future Of Long-vacant Somerville Bakery Decided

SOMERVILLE, MA — An old, long-vacant pastry shop is set to be put to better use.

Patsy’s Pastry Shop at 182 Broadway will be purchased by the city for the pur[pose of converting it to 100 percent affordable housing units, according to Ward One City Councilor and State Senate Candidate Matt McLaughlin.

“There are hundreds of vacant lots across the Commonwealth that should be used to build affordable housing. Somerville is leading the way with Patsy's and Star Market,” McLaughlin said in a statement. “If we can build affordable housing in the most densely populated city in the state, others can do the same.”

Patsy’s was a Somerville staple for nearly 50 years until it closed its doors in May 2015. Founder Patsy Ferrigno opened the location after having success with a Boston food truck.

McLaughlin said the area is now zoned for approximately five stories of housing. He credited the Somerville Community Corporation as a driving force behind the acquisition and project.
