Cook wants all community members who are feeling down in the dumps to join together and wallow in sadness. He previously threw the “Saddest Parade on Earth” which was held in Beverly.

“We have a hard time talking about it in our society, so I thought this was a way to talk about it in both a serious way and a funny way,” Cook told WHDH.

There will be artists, writers, and performers to offer sad songs and readings, and even facepainters to paint on some tears.

Over 4,500 residents are planning to attend the event, according to Facebook.

“This event will hopefully not only convey the ongoing quirkiness and wackiness of Somerville, but will also shed some light on issues of sadness and depression,” Rachel Strutt, Somerville Arts Council’s cultural director, told Boston.com.

The Pity Party will take place from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m on Thursday, September 17.
