Somerville Eliminates Minimum Parking Requirement: Report

The City Council passed the new regulations at its recent meeting.

SOMERVILLE, MA — The City Council voted to pass a new zoning ordinance that eliminates the requirement for a minimum amount of parking spaces with new building developments, according to a report from the Commonwealth Beacon.

Somerville becomes only the second municipality in the state to pass this ordinance, joining its neighbor Cambridge which adopted the rules in 2022.

Somerville eliminated parking requirements for locations built within a half-mile of public transportation. According to Council President Ben Ewen-Campen, that ordinance accounted for approximately 70% of the city.
