Somerville Loaned Nearly $4 Million For Water Pipe Replacement Project

The city aims to remove any and all lead traces from its water system.

SOMERVILLE, MA — The city has received a loan of $3,986,595 from the Massachusetts Clean Water Trust Board of Trustees for the Lead Service Line Replacement Program.

The program first launched in 2019, with the goal of replacing the approximately 4% of Somerville’s pipelines that are made of lead, which in turn could affect the drinking water.
The Board of Trustees works with the state’s Department of Environmental Protection to help municipalities replace water and sewer infrastructure. Loans and grants are funded through the State Revolving Funds. Somerville’s loan is one part of a total of more than $294 million allocated throughout the Commonwealth.

The Clean Water Trust has funded $9 billion toward water-quality improvements since its inception in 1989.
