Somerville Reconfirms Its Sanctuary City Status: Report
The City Council voted to re-enforce its status in the aftermath of the 2024 Presidential Election.
SOMERVILLE, MA — The City Council has voted to reconfirm Somerville’s status as a sanctuary city, according to a report from NBC10 Boston.
The resolution was brought forth by Councilor-At-Large Wilfred Mbah and Ward 7 Councilor Judy Pineda Neufeld, and directs city departments to reject any federal funds that have conditions that could be used to deport residents.
Somerville first declared itself a sanctuary city in 1987, and last reconfirmed its status in 2016 in response to the election of Donald Trump as President of the United States.
Councilors did not reveal specific changes to the language, but said the new ordinance was nearly identical to the previous one.
