Police: Homeless Man Robbed South End Bank

The following information was supplied by the Boston Police Department. Charges listed do not indicate convictions. 

A homeless man was charged with robbing a South End bank.

Officers responded to a report of a robbery in progress at about 10:58 a.m. at the Hingham Institute of Savings at 540 Tremont Street.

Officers arrived at the bank and talked to the manager, who reported that a man wearing a black ball cap, a loose fitting shirt and black shorts just robbed the bank. Officers put out the description of the suspect, who matched the description of a suspect in an attempted robbery at 131 Clarendon Street.

Police spoke to the teller, who said that they were behind the counter and the suspect passed them a note. Then the suspect pulled back and said “Don’t give me your dye pack, just give me your fifties and twenties.”

The suspect took off on foot onto Tremont Street. A witness said the suspect head up Hanson Street towards Tremont Street between Hanson and Waltham Street and then to Washington Street.

Officers in that area saw a man and a woman running towards a bus. Officers stopped the man and let the woman get on the bus. Witnesses and bank employees identified the suspect. Officers searched the suspect and found $1120 in cash. Officers searched his bag and found the clothes the suspect was wearing.

Officers charged Christopher Mahoney, a homeless man, with unarmed robbery.
