Worcester Square Tree Lighting Sunday
Event founder Rose Mehegan will push the button to light the Worcester Square holiday tree.
Worcester Square residents will be celebrating the holiday season this Sunday with an afternoon of festivities culminating in the lighting of a 20-foot tree.
Now in its 49th year, the tree lighting event was begun by former Worcester Square resident Rose Mehegan. Although Mehegan has since retired to Rhode Island, she'll be returning to the South End to light the tree on Sunday.
Joining her will be Santa Claus, bearing gifts for children in attendance, and the jazz quartet First Take, which will provide music for the event alongside members of the Back Bay Chorale. Refreshments have been donated by local restaurants and guests can enter a raffle to win gift cards to local businesses, a case of wine, and a grand prize of $500.

A portion of the proceeds from the raffle will be donated to United South End Settlements.
Last year’s event attracted more than 300 people and raised over $3,000, according to organizers.

“We are working hard to live up to the standards set by Rose Mehegan 50 years ago,” said Event Chairman Michel LaFlamme. “We’re delighted she can join us this year to see how the event has grown.”
The festivies begin at 4 p.m. on Sunday in the square.
