State to Swimmers: Don't Go for a Dip at the Fells

Warm, sunny days are upon us, but those tempted to cool off with a swim in waters within Middlesex Fells should resist the urge for their own safety, according to the state.

The Massachusetts Water Resources Authority is reminding swimmers that the waters at the Fells are off limits, according to a press statement.

"The Fells has many rock outcroppings and swimmers who are tired or hit their heads while diving are a long way from emergency medical help," reads the press statement. "The facility is not staffed and there are no lifeguards on duty. There have been fatalities at this site in the past and more recently at nearby Spot Pond."

The High Fells Reservoir could also be used as an emergency water supply and needs to be kept clean, reads the statement.

"In an emergency situation, the reservoir could be put into service as a drinking water supply in a very short time," reads the statement. "Swimmers and dogs in the water pose a real threat to water quality."
