Tour Stoneham’s Old Burying Ground This Weekend
The historic cemetery dates back to the early 1700s and Stoneham's founding days.

STONEHAM, MA — Stoneham community members will have a chance to visit the town’s Old Burying Ground this weekend as part of a planned Open Day coordinated by the Stoneham Historical Commission.
The event is set for Saturday from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the Old Burying Ground at the intersection of Pleasant and William Streets in Stoneham.
There will be guided tours of the site as well as self-guided options, as noted in a recent event announcement.

The Old Burying Ground dates back to 1726, according to a town history. It spans just over one acre, with close to 350 headstones ranging in age from 1728 to 1924.
The site is a surviving property close to Stoneham’s original town center area, dating back to days shortly after Stoneham’s separation from what was then the independent municipality of Charlestown.

Those laid to rest in the cemetery range from veterans to abolitionists to victims of smallpox and at least one centenarian, according to the town.
The Stoneham Old Burying Ground is listed in the state Register of Historic Places.
