Car Strikes Utility Pole on Central St. in Stoughton, Knocking Out Power, Closing Road
The accident occurred early Wednesday morning. Just minutes later, the Stoughton Fire Department also responded to a basement fire on Turnpike St.
A single car struck a utility pole on Central St. early Wednesday morning, ejecting the male operator from the vehicle.
Just minutes later, the also responded to a call in North Stoughton, this one a basement fire on Turnpike St. There were no injuries reported.
The car accident occurred at 1:27 a.m. on Wednesday, at 1906 Central St., near the intersection with Mill St., Stoughton Fire Captain Robert O’Donnell said.

The car struck the pole and the pole broke in half, bringing down wires. The male operator was ejected from the vehicle and found unconscious underneath the front bumper of the car, O’Donnell said.
MedFlight was unavailable, O’Donnell said, so the driver was transported via ambulance to Boston Medical Center with serious injuries.

The damage to the utility pole knocked out power for some residents in surrounding neighborhoods, according to an outage map posted on the National Grid website.
The reported on its Facebook page that Central St. was closed during the morning commute. One lane has since reopened, according to the SPD, but police were still suggesting that residents seek an alternate route.
Five minutes after the car accident, the Stoughton Fire Department received a call for a basement fire at 1857 Turnpike St. at 1:32 a.m.
There was light smoke showing from the basement of the single family home, the result of a small fire involving a microwave oven in the basement, O’Donnell said.
The fire was extinguished and there were no injuries, he said.
There was minimal fire damage and moderate smoke damage throughout the house, however.
The two calls occurring just minutes apart put a strain on a department with just nine on duty during this overnight shift. Stoughton received mutual aid for both calls—the Sharon Fire Department assisted with the Central St. accident and the Randolph Fire Department assisted with the Turnpike St. fire, O’Donnell said.
