Region Roundup: Fatal Car Crash; Child Rapist Behind Bars (And More...)

Auricelli Braga, 32, of Stoughton, was charged with motor-vehicle homicide, negligent operation of a motor vehicle and driving without a license following a two-car crash in Canton on June 24 which killed a Stoughton grandmother.

Braga, from Brazil, is not a legal resident, according to the Boston Herald. She has been in this country illegally since 2002, the paper reports.

Sara Escudero, a 64-year-old Stoughton woman, . She was on her way to work at the time.

As part of its FY13 budget, the State Legislature included amendments that crack down on unlicensed illegal immigrant drivers.

Bristol County District Attorney Sam Sutter announced June 25 that Paul Hawksley, 43, of Mansfield, was convicted in Fall River Superior Court of rape of a child with force, two counts of statutory rape of a child, and one count of indecent assault and battery on a child under 14. 

The incident ocurred in Easton.

Between 2003 and late 2004 Paul Hawksley volunteered as a Youth Leader at the Free Evangelical Church in Easton.

During that time he was a small group leader of sixth grade boys during Youth Group. It is here that he chose his victim, a young boy, who at the time was 11-years-old.

The Norton Fire Department received a report of a kitchen fire at 111 Lincoln St Monday afternoon.

The family living at the home was vacationing in New Hampshire when the fire started. Two cats were in the house at the time but were not harmed. Two firefighters were brought to the hospital for heat exhaustion and an ankle injury. 

Off duty Easton firefighter Lawrence Blye was able to cool down the fire with a garden hose before Norton Fire Department arrived. Blye, who was coming home from Easton at the time, lives in Norton.

Jose Silvestre, 38, of Attleboro was issued a summons arrest on June 25 for larceny of a motor vehicle and felony larceny. 

The owner of the vehicle called police and said that, Silvestre had stolen his 2004 Kia Optima from the Canoe River Campgrounds in Mansfield.

Christina’s Fireside Grille, located at 2 Washington St. in Foxborough, because the function hall’s owners reportedly owe the property’s landlord $550,000, according to a story on Fox 25.

The property’s landlord, Nicholas Panagopoulos, told Fox 25’s Heather Hegedus Tuesday that the owners of Christina’s, Marjorie Clapprood and her husband, Chris Spinazzola, have not paid rent in two years and owe an additional $120,000 in taxes and utility bills, according to Fox 25.

It is the unthinkable nightmare that every bride fears: the sudden closing of the location of your wedding. With the announcement that Christina’s will be shutting down, the plans of multiple weddings including three this weekend, are in shambles. 

But local businesses are stepping up, ready to open their doors to these wedding parties.

2012 King Philip graduate and soon to be Maryland freshman Jake Layman recently played for USA Basketball's under-18 team in the FIBA Americas U18 Championship where they took first place.

Layman’s biggest game came against Mexico. In 16 minutes of playing time, Layman scored a game-high 18 points and went 3-5 from three point range as Team USA cruised to a 110-59 win.

Martha Stewart sampled Easton resident Emily Cioffi's Whimsical Garden Cake recipe on national television June 28, and then gave her a present.

It was the trophy in the "Today" Show's Quest for the Best Birthday Cake competition.

"Emily takes the cake!" Stewart declared after sampling the three finalists' confections on the NBC program this past Thursday morning. 

Cioffi, who used to live in Sharon, submitted her recipe, which the show's website describes as a "chocolate cake with Italian meringue buttercream frosting and marshmallow fondant."
