Region Roundup: Helping Hands, Combat Roles for Women in the Military (And More…)

About a month after a in Norton, the Clinkscale family is still recovering. But thanks to a few generous people like 11-year-old Nicholas Pucino, they are about $200 closer to getting back on their feet.

A fifth grader at , Nicholas’ bus drives by the home every day. When he found out about the fire, he thought it would be a good idea to have a fundraiser at the school to help the family out.

As a special Presidents’ Day video project, Stoughton Patch had 16 students from across the read what is one of, if not the most famous speeches delivered by an American President—The Gettysburg Address.

Students ranging in age from first grade to 12th grade, and representing each of Stoughton’s five elementary schools, middle school and high school, took turns reading the address.

next athletic director will be new to the district.

The Sharon Public Schools Athletic Director Search Committee announced today that the three finalists it has recommended to Superintendent Timothy Farmer are Michael Bierwirth, director of athletics at Immaculate High School in Danbury, Conn. for the past four years; Christopher Donovan, athletic director and activities coordinator at Westport High School; and William Martin, department coordinator, coach and physical education and health teacher at Shepherd Hill Regional High School in Dudley.

Senator Scott Brown, R-MA, attracted national attention Wednesday after sending a letter to Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta asking him to allow women to serve in combat roles in the U.S. military. 

Brown, a Lieutenant-Colonel and 32-year veteran of the Massachusetts National Guard, said he believes that allowing women to serve will enhance the capabilities of the armed services. 

"We have an obligation to expand the professional opportunities available to women, especially considering their sacrifices," said Brown. "Doing so in my view would improve military effectiveness, not detract from it."
