The Mansfield School Committee approved a measure that would increase penalties for underage drinking and illegal drug use among Mansfield High athletes.

Current MIAA policy in the Chemical Health Rule states that a student found taking illicit drugs; controlled substances, steroids or drinking alcohol would be in violation of the rule. Violation of the rule includes penalties such as decreased eligibility and complete nonparticipation in MIAA activities, depending on incident occurance.

In an effort to stop illegal underage drinking, the new MHS policy would now include any student who voluntarily stays at a place where steroids, marijuana and alcohol is being illegally consumed, bought, sold or given away, as evidenced by a police report.

"Destiny doesn’t just happen; instead, it is created by a lifetime of choices, and it is yours to design," said Janet L. Robinson, retired CEO of the New York Times Company, to the Class of 2012 during Wheaton College’s 177th Commencement ceremony on Saturday, May 19.

“It is important to remember that life is not just about chance, it is about choice. Chance is what the world brings to you. But choice is what you bring to the world,” the keynote speaker told the 404 graduating seniors.

“Do not leave your journey to chance. Choose to do whatever it is that you love, and do it enthusiastically, relentlessly and unapologetically.”
