Stoughton Daisy Scout Troop Helping to “Raise the Flag”

Thanks to a group of , in addition to dozens of other groups and individuals in town, Stoughton is closer to having its own 30 foot by 60 foot American flag that can be displayed at patriotic events like the Veterans’ Day, Memorial Day or July 4th parades.

Stoughton’s joined the fundraising efforts to help “” here in town, making a donation last Friday during their meeting at .

“Raise the Flag” was started by Stoughton resident Christine Iacobucci (a Stoughton Patch reporter/columnist) and her daughter, Isabella, a first grader at the Hansen School and a member of Daisy Troop 65159.

The goal of the fundraiser is to purchase a large event flag for Stoughton, so the town doesn’t have to borrow a similar flag from neighboring communities. The Stoughton Fire Department had to do this last year, borrowing a flag to display at the first night of and the .

Daisy Troop 65159 has been busy selling cookies (they have sold almost 1,200 boxes so far) but the troop also collected 600 cans and donated the money from recycling these cans to “Raise the Flag.”

“The community support has been amazing,” Christine Iacobucci said. “We have received donations from so many different town organizations.  I am sure I am forgetting someone, but Cheng Du, Jonathan Adams (the owner of Wizard Computer Services), the Fire Department, Randolph Savings Bank, the Boy Scouts, the West School PTO, the Board of Selectmen and the Chamber of Commerce are just some of the many contributors.”  

“Isabella was so proud to receive the check from her own Daisy Scout Troop, she can't believe the amount of money we have raised!,” Iacobucci continued.  

“She was even more amazed when I told her that Stephen Prone of the Prone Foundation was going to match every dollar we received from January 1st on. Her exact words were, "Wow, what a nice man," and I totally agree.  Like I said, we continue to be in awe of everyone's generosity.”

Currently, “Raise the Flag” has received slightly more than the original goal of $2,000, Iacobucci said.

“The goal was established based on a few estimates we had initially received between $1,500-$2,500.  We have continued the fundraiser because with the customization as well as an appropriate container to store the flag put us over the $2,000 mark.  We are working with the Eagle Flag Company based out of Cohasset to establish the definitive cost.  We just want to be sure that we purchase the most durable flag and a container to protect it to ensure its longevity. I hope for my grandkids to see the flag waving and to be proud not only of their country but of their town and Bella,” Iacobucci said. 

She continued, “I also want to be sure that everyone knows that if we do raise additional funds, beyond the cost of the flag and container, 100% of those funds will be donated to the Stoughton's Veteran's Association.”
