Stoughton Selectmen Declare March 12 as Girl Scout Day

Sixth grader Victoria Tucker of Troop 80378 asked selectmen to declare a day for Girl Scouts in honor of the organization's 100th anniversary.

March 12 has been declared Girl Scout Day in Stoughton after the Board of Selectmen unanimously approved sixth grader Victoria Tucker’s request at their January 17 meeting.

Tucker is a member of Troop 80378 in Stoughton. She asked selectmen to declare a day for in honor of the organization’s 100th anniversary.

The Board was happy to oblige and will be drafting an official proclamation to mark the day.

“ aims to empower girls and to help teach values such as courage, confidence and character,” Tucker told selectmen. 

“We learn these [values] through our badge program which teaches us life skills in a fun way,” she continued.

Selectman Cynthia Walsh, who was a Girl Scout in her youth, praised the organization, saying, “it gets you to aim higher…you don’t just get your badges for baking cookies.”

Tucker started the meeting by reciting the Pledge of Allegiance.

Tens of thousands of Girl Scouts from around the world will be traveling to Washington, D.C. for a 100th Anniversary "Rock the Mall" sing-along in June.
