1. Immaculate’s Father Joe Celebrates 50th Anniversary of Ordination  

Rev. Fr. Joseph McDermott recently celebrated the 50th Anniversary of his Ordination as a Roman Catholic Priest during a February 5 mass at Immaculate Conception.

Father McDermott, more affectionately referred to as “Father Joe,” has been serving Stoughton’s Immaculate Conception Church since 1992.

2. Police Beat

  • A woman was found “slumped over the wheel” of her car with two small children in the vehicle early Wednesday morning, February 8, at a Stoughton Mobil station.
  • Ariel Higgins, a level 2 sex offender, was arrested after allegedly exposing himself to a woman in Stoughton on Thursday, February 9.

3. Stoughton Chamber of Commerce “Caught You Doing Something Good”

The  gave out several "Caught You Doing Something Good" awards Monday afternoon, February 6, at the Texas Roadhouse in Brockton, as part of the Chamber’s February meeting.

4. In the Schools  

  • More than 400 OMS students in grades 6-8 made the Term 2 Honor Roll.
  • freshman Matthew Williams and 8th grade student Mallory Breen have been accepted to perform with the Southeastern Junior District Honors Festival this coming March.
  • Party All Night Long (PANL) is in its 13th year and is the annual post-graduation bash for the Stoughton High School senior class. The group is looking for volunteers and donations to help make this year’s party a success.

5. Stoughton Selectmen Vote to Form Citizen Committee and Hire Consulting Firm for Town Manager Search

Town Manager Francis T. Crimmins, Jr. informed selectmen of his resignation, effective March 31, 2012. Selectmen are taking the initial steps in finding a replacement.

In a rare 2-1 vote at their Tuesday, February 7 meeting, Selectmen agreed to advertise for a citizens’ search committee for a new Town Manager.

As part of the same motion, the Board also voted to hire a consultant firm to assist in this process and voted to ask the Finance Committee for a $20,000 transfer of funds to pay the consulting fees.

The search committee will help select the consulting firm and will help advise the Board in the hiring process, as will the consulting firm.

6. Sports

After both losing to Oliver Ames on Tuesday, the Stoughton High varsity basketball teams bounced back Friday against Sharon.

The Stoughton High boys’ basketball team earned a 50-47 road win on Sharon’s senior night, improving to 14-2.

Meanwhile, the Black Knights girls’ basketball team beat Sharon, 46-40, winning on Stoughton’s Senior Night. With the win Stoughton (10-5) clinches a spot in the postseason tournament.
