Bridge Tests Could Delay Boston-Bound Drivers

Tests on the General Edwards drawbridge on Route 1A could halt traffic for lengthy periods of time on Tuesday night and Wednesday morning.

Swampscott commuters headed to or from Boston on Tuesday night and early Wednesday morning may face significant delays if they plan on using the General Edwards Drawbridge on Route 1A between Lynn and Revere.

Between 9 p.m. on Tuesday and 5 a.m. on Wednesday, the movable spans of the drawbridge will be opened, which will stop traffic for up to 20 minutes.

The bridge will be opened several times throughout the night to test recent upgrades and make sure they are functioning properly. Workers will also record the baseline condition of the new electronic system.

While the work has been scheduled at night to reduce the impact to traffic, it will cause lengthy delays when the drawbridge is opened. To avoid the General Edwards Bridge, drivers can get across the Saugus River by using Route 107 (Western Avenue).
