MBTA Line Shut Down For Summer Weekends

The first public meeting regarding the Newburyport/Rockport commuter rail is coming up.

SWAMPSCOTT, MA – Three public meetings will cover the scheduled shutdown of MBTA commuter rail services on the Newburyport/Rockport line for weekends over the summer.

The Newburyport/Rockport line won't run on weekends from July 8 to Sept. 30. The three public meetings will be held in Gloucester City Hall on April 26, at 6:30 p.m.; in Newburyport City Hall on May 1, at 6:30 p.m.; and Beverly City Hall on May 2, at 6:30 p.m.

The line will be shut down to install equipment required by the Federal Railroad Administration Rail Safety Improvement Act. The equipment will support Positive Train Control systems, which help prevent train-on-train collisions, over speed derailments, and unexpected movement of trains.
