The deadline to weigh in on parking in downtown Swampscott is Nov. 22.

SWAMPSCOTT, MA - Swampscott officials are hoping to get a better sense of how much parking is needed in the downtown area and asking residents to help.

In conjunction with the Metropolitan Area Planning Council (MAPC), the town of Swampscott will be performing a a parking-analysis study of the downtown Humphrey Street area, according to a release from Swampscott Director of Community Development Pete Kane.

With the opening of new businesses as well as the creation of the Humphrey Street Overlay Zoning District, Kane said the town is now focused on analyzing and developing a parking management plan for the district. MAPC planners collected parking statistics in the district over the summer and will continue to do so through the fall.

Kane said the plan will help guide the town on ways to better manage what parking is available, opportunities for increased parking, and ways to better ensure parking spaces turn over so others can have the opportunity to shop and visit the downtown area,

“Significant streetscape improvements have been made including the installation of sidewalk extensions, bicycle lanes, and (soon) new historic lighting,” wrote Kane. “The community has seen strong business activity within this district. There are many great dining establishments that are complimented by service, specialty goods, clothing, and convenience shops.”
