Swampscott Polar Plunge to Benefit New School Programs
Nothing like plunging into freezing waters to celebrate the new year, and help out some good causes.
SWAMPSCOTT, MA – For the 11th year, the Swampscott Yacht Club will host the Polar Bear Plunge, where participants dash into the water off Fisherman's Beach on New Years Day.
Participants will raise money for two newly-formed programs in the Swampscott School district at the Jan. 1, 11 a.m. event. The first are the SWIFT and HARBOR programs, which seek to support Swampscott High School students struggling with mental health challenges.
The Polar Bear Plunge has raised more than $90,000 over the years for local charities like the Swampscott Library, the Haven Project, the Friends of Swampscott Sailing, and more.

The funds raised at the Polar Bear Plunge will help support the programs at the high school, and bring them to the middle school.
The programs are run in partnership with families and local support agencies, and are open to all students who need temporary support. SWIFT gives students a place to transition back into the school year after a long absence, and is staffed with people who can help manage anxiety, overwhelming workloads, lingering medical issues, and can help connect families with outside resources.

Funds from the plunge will also go to the Russell J. Hopkins Children's Fund in honor of Rusty Hopkins, who passed away on Oct. 25. Hopkins was a lifelong resident of Swampscott, and served in the Navy during the Gulf War. The fund will help pay for higher education of Hopkins' young children.
Those who wish to participate can preregister through Dec. 28. The day of the event, registration begins at 10:15 a.m. at the Fish House at 425 Humphrey St. Preregistered participants will receive T shirts, and all swimmers will get complimentary hot drinks. The recommended minimum donation is $30, but all sponsors are encouraged to give as much as they're able.
