Veterans Day 2014: What's Open and Closed in Swampscott

Veterans Day originated as “Armistice Day” on Nov. 11, 1919, the first anniversary marking the end of World War I. Congress passed a resolution in 1926 for an annual observance, and Nov. 11 became a national holiday beginning in 1938. The day honors military veterans with parades and speeches across the nation.

Here’s a look at some of what is open and what is closed in Swampscott on Tuesday. As always, it is best to call ahead.

Swampscott Town Hall: Closed

Swampscott Public Library: Closed.

U.S. Post Offices and mail delivery: The post office on Elmwood Road in Swampscott is closed. There is no mail delivery.

Trash pickup: No trash pickup, pickup is delayed by one day all week.

Banks: Most banks are closed - including Bank of America and Salem Five.

MBTA: Commuter rail and buses will operate on a regular weekday schedule.

Schools: All schools closed.

Supermarkets, convenience store, pharmacies, restaurants and other retail businesses: Many local businesses are open regular hours, but it is always good to call ahead.

Liquor Stores: Allowed to be open, by law. Call ahead.
