We Don't Need a Rat Czar; We Have EVOLVEd

Swampscott Begins Rollout of Rodent Contraceptive

Unlike some authorities frustrated by increasing rodent numbers in their municipalities, and despite efforts involving all sorts of traditional methods, Swampscott, MA, will begin to implement a protocol to decrease the rat population without adding pesticides into the environment.

Deb Newman, president of Speak Up For Animals, persuaded Swampscott officials to consider alternatives to poison, including second generation anticoagulant rodenticides, which not only cause a painful bleeding-out for rats and mice who consume the bait, but also doom birds of prey and other rodent predators to the same horrific fate. Newman especially favors Evolve™ Rodent Birth Control, made by SenesTech, because it is the most humane method of controlling rodent populations. “We have to stop seeing wildlife as ‘the enemy’ and take responsibility for our own mess instead of blaming rodents for their natural attraction to trash and invitations into unsecured buildings.”

Max Kasper, Swampscott’s Director of Facilities, accepted Newman’s suggestion for a pilot program and an offer to meet with SenesTech’s Vice President of Sales, Bryan DiMenna, and the company’s Director of Marketing, Rochelle Paulet. Impressed by their extensive presentation on the efficacy and sustainability of Evolve, Mr. Kasper agreed to have SenesTech’s people come to Swampscott’s fire station to create a viable plan at the site and educate on the product.

According to DiMenna, “Success is inevitable when three things happen: proper placement of bait stations; consistently timed bait replacement; and integrated pest management that includes public education regarding trash and other rodent attractants.” He also agreed, at Kasper’s request, to a free assessment of the Swampscott Middle School, with a proposal of solutions to follow.

“You may be relieved when your exterminator tells you he caught 50 rats at one site last month,” said DiMenna, “but if he’s not getting close to 300 a week, then you’ll never solve the problem. Just two rats in one year can become 15,000. Evolve Rat stops reproduction which is the only effective way to approach eradication. And, it does so without harming any animals or the environment.”

Newman expressed her gratitude toward Kasper. “I’m thrilled that Max is receptive to this project, and that he is so open-minded and forward-thinking. We need a smart, compassionate leader, not a czar. Killing and more killing perpetuates the notion that rodents are mere objects to clear out of our way. What an unethical message to give, especially to children, even as we read them bedtime stories about kind, playful, and industrious mice. And, obviously, the killing doesn’t work; rats abound.”
