LETTER: As Storm Approaches, Everyone Needs To Do Their Part

Resident says cooperation and respect are the keys to the community riding out the storm.

Do your part…
As we are all bracing for our “big storm” that is coming from tomorrow to Saturday, I’d just like to remind everyone to do your part for the safety of all of the residents in Town. First and foremost, if there is a fire hydrant near your home, please take the few minutes needed and shovel it out. This could very well be a matter of life and death, if God-forbid, a fire should break out in a near-by home or even your own home, this would save costly minutes for the fire department to go searching for a hydrant.

Also, please, please, please – if you have a sidewalk in front of / alongside of your property, clear a path. With the possibility of school being cancelled tomorrow and the weekend upon us I am sure we will see many children in Town walking with sleds and snow tubes to the closest hilly area or just going to a friend’s house to play in the snow. Yes, I am aware that some locations have the Town DPW come out with their “Sidewalk Plow”, but that may not happen for days. If a little extra effort gives a little extra protection for our children, just do it.

Please don’t forget elderly neighbors – see if they are ok, if they need a hand to shovel out, that they have heat and enough to get through the storm.
Lastly, don’t forget about your pets. Animals dehydrate at extremely rapid rates in the bitter cold – just as quickly as on an extremely hot summer day. If their water source is frozen, animals will automatically lick snow to hydrate, which in fact, dehydrates them at an even faster rate.
