The MMA is a private, nonpartisan, nonprofit organization of cities and towns whose mission is to improve the effectiveness of local government in the Commonwealth. The organization’s goals include public policy advocacy, membership education, intergovernmental relations, services to cities and towns, public awareness, and unity.

More than 100 local officials from communities across Massachusetts serve on MMA policy committees, which advise the MMA Board of Directors, staff, and MMA members on legislative, regulatory, and public policy issues. The committees also draft resolutions for the MMA’s Annual Business Meeting, municipal best practices for the MMA’s Best Practices series, and bills for the MMA’s legislative package.

Councilor Smith-Galvin has been selected to join the MMA's Policy Committee on Energy and the Environment.  This committee formulates policy related to water quality, water supply, air quality, solid waste and recycling, hazardous waste, wetlands, coastal areas, wastewater treatment, renewable energy, and energy conservation.

Councilor Chines has been selected to join the MMA's Fiscal Policy Committee.  The Fiscal Policy Committee considers all municipal finance issues, as well as legislative issues that have a fiscal impact on cities and towns.  This committee also develops a policy framework for local government financing in the future.

"I'm proud to represent our community on the MMA's Fiscal Policy Committee," said Councilor Chines.  "Our involvement in the MMA helps assure that Wakefield's interests are considered in state-level decisions around local aid and tax policy."  Councilor Smith-Galvin agreed. "Working at the state level on issues important to Wakefield ensures that we get the benefit of sharing and learning best practices."

Councilors Smith-Galvin and Chines join Town Administrator Stephen Maio, who serves on the MMA's Policy Committee on Municipal and Regional Administration.
