Wakefield High School Options To Be Discussed With Community

WAKEFIELD, MA — The community is invited to a forum on where the conversation surrounding a potential new or renovated high school sits.

The Permanent Building Committee will host a virtual community forum Jan. 20 at. 7 p.m. on the progress and conceptual design options being studied, the town said. On the docket is: The feasibility study process and schedule; Wakefield High existing conditions; and alternative design option review.

The Massachusetts School Building Authority in December invited Wakefield to work on a feasibility study for a significant upgrade to Wakefield Memorial High School — either a renovation or completely new building.

The School Committee last week heard about several options for the project, ranging from renovating parts of the school and fieldhouse to a completely new building. You can watch the full discussion here.

The high school was originally built as a junior high school in 1960 and converted into the current high school 12 years later with major additions. The high school has not had much work significant done since.

Wakefield submitted a statement of interest to the Massachusetts School Building Authority in 2019. The MSBA can reimburse the town for up to half of eligible construction costs. The proposed new Northeast Metro Tech construction would be significantly aided by the MSBA.
