5 Things, August 8: EEE Risk Raised to Critical in Nearby Towns, State to Conduct More Aerial Spraying

1. Sunny Skies, High Near 86 Predicted Today

Wednesday calls for mostly sunny skies, with a high near 86, according to the National Weather Service. Light southwest wind becoming south 5 to 10 mph in the morning. Wednesday night, look for partly cloudy skies, with a low around 69. South wind 5 to 7 mph becoming calm after midnight.

2. EEE Risk Raised to Critical in Nearby Towns

Once again, EEE was found in mosquitoes in the nearby community of Easton, and the state is stepping into action.

More findings of positive pools in the area have led the Department of Public Health to announce plans for another round of aerial spraying in Easton, Bridgewater, Norton, Raynham, Taunton, and West Bridgewater. Additionally, the risk for EEE has been raised from "high" to "critical" - the highest risk in those towns.

Spraying , during the weekend of July 21 and 22. This time, the Department of Public Health said spraying will begin "as soon as possible, following appropriate public notification and outreach."

Although the last round of spraying , according to the DPH, the state is hoping another round of aerial spraying will curtail it even further.

“While we saw a significant reduction in mosquitoes following the July aerial spraying, we are still concerned about the high levels of EEE that pose a public health threat to residents in southeastern Massachusetts,” said Department of Agricultural Resources Commissioner Gregory Watson in a statement. “We are continuing to work at the local and state level to employ the tools available to us to further knock down the mosquito population.”

According to the DPH website, Walpole's current risk level for mosquito-borne illness is "low". However, Sharon, Norwood and Westwood have "moderate" risk levels. Canton has a "high" risk level. To view a town-by-town map of risk levels click here.

3. Fourth and Fifth Grade Pool Party
