Coffee Perch Hoping to Brew Up Success in Walpole

The Main Street coffeehouse is scheduled to open in August.

Something's brewing on Main Street.

As you may have noticed, there has been a lot of hammering and sawing at the corner of Main and Common Streets as the owners of The Raven's Nest prepare for their foray into the world of the coffeehouse.

Two doors down from their Main Street pub will be The Coffee Perch, scheduled to open the week of Aug. 6.

Owners Mark and Maura McAuliffe were at the Perch Wednesday busily staining tables and fastening screws.

“This space opened up in early January - it was formerly a florist – and we kind of joked around one night like ‘Oh. We should open a coffeehouse there,’” said Maura.

The joking around grew into serious talks about whether the idea could be a success.

“We felt that there was a void in the community,” Maura said. “Really we’re hoping this will be sort of a community hub. Come here and see your neighbors, see your friends, see your local politicians.”

The Coffee Perch will sell three blends of coffee from a roaster in Rhode Island, espresso drinks and baked goods including bagels, muffins, croissants, scones and breakfast sandwiches.

While they are busily hanging bird-themed decor on the walls - including a giant branch from their backyard that will hang from the ceiling - they are leaving one wall blank to allow for local artists to showcase their work.

Walpole photographer Liana Cosgrove will be the first to have her work on display. Each display will stay up for about six weeks, Maura said.

The McAuliffe's are also in discussions with the town to have outdoor seating in the front of the shop.

“There’s a few little tweaks that we’re trying to get through but the gears are in motion,” she said.

Working since May, the McAuliffes plan to take a much-anticipated vacation before the opening of the Perch and plan to open up shop the week of August 6.

They are also planning an official grand opening some time after Labor Day.
