Here's What Massachusetts Booksellers Are Reading In 2024

We asked seven booksellers what we should read in 2024. This is what they said.

MASSACHUSETTS — There are thousands of books published every year. Those works span genre, time period and point of view.

That's a lot to read, but can make the decision-making process around what to purchase challenging for readers, too.

This is why having a local bookstore can be so helpful. With that in mind, Patch reached out to seven booksellers across the state to get their thoughts on what to read.

Favorite book of 2023?

"Demon Copperhead" by Barbara Kingsolver. It delves into real life, real time issues while following an artist's journey and all the ups and down that come with life and expression.

Book to read for 2024

"Modern Poetry" by Diane Suess.

Mathew Tombers, Edgartown Books

Favorite book of 2023?

"The Thursday Murder Club" by Richard Osman. I was on vacation; I needed a book that was interesting though not demanding. It is, I think, destined to be a classic in a long line of British mystery classics.

Book to read for 2024

Just came out: "You Dreamed of Empires" by Alvaro Enrique, a telling of the meeting of Cortes and Montezuma. I have taken it with me on vacation.

Favorite book of 2023?

Suzanne: Favorite book of 2023 is "The Fraud" by Zadie Smith. I love historical fiction and this novel was based on a true story and it was filled with interesting characters who stood for what they believed in.

Katie: Favorite book of 2023 is "Victory City" by Salman Rushdie. It's a book of big ideas made easy to swallow with humor, its fable-like narrative and collection of distinguishable character types feel unique to this particular book.

Book to read for 2024

Suzanne: I'm looking forward to Wandering Stars by Tommy Orange and Until August by Gabriel Garcia Marquez.

Katie: For 2024, excited for "The Familiar" by Leigh Bardugo, "Caledonian Road" by Andrew O'Hagan, "How To Live Free in a Dangerous World" by Shayla Lawson and "Who's Afraid of Gender" by Judith Butler.

Favorite book of 2023?

Tim: "Tom Lake" by Ann Patchett, "The Rachel Incident" by Caroline O' Donoghue and "Speech Team" by Tim Murphy. All 3 titles were entertaining escapes while at the same time being personally relatable for a myriad of reasons.

Cristina: Favorite book of 2023 was The Guest by Emma Cline. I love stories about struggling drifters and the writing was perfect.

Elissa: Favorite Book of 2023 was "Fourth Wing" by Rebecca Yarros. After trudging through the many identical fantasy novels that have come out in the last few years, "Fourth Wing" was a breath of fresh air. With its compelling characters, rich world building, and intriguing plot!

Book to read in 2024

Tim: I am looking forward to so many books in 2024. "Same As It Ever Was" by Claire Lombardo, "The God of the Woods" by Liz Moore, "James" by Percival Everett, Rufi Thorpe's "Margo's Got Money Troubles", the new Louise Penny mystery "The Grey Wolf", and the list could go on and on.

Cristina: For 2024, "Same As It Ever Was" by Claire Lombardo and "The Second Coming" by Garth Risk Hallberg.

Elissa: For 2024 I'm is looking forward to "A Witches Guide to Magical Innkeeping" by Sangu Mandanna.
