Wind Knocks Tree Onto House, 2 Cars, Fence In Waltham

More than 200,000 customers awoke to no power across the state, but this is what one homeowner found Thursday, thanks to the wind.

WALTHAM, MA —Some 250 customers are still without power and one homeowner is contending with a tree that fell, damaging her home, two cars and a fence Thursday, some 10 hours after the lights went out. The tree also hit a utility pole, but apparently didn't disrupt power to the house.

At its worst, more than 223,000 were without power in Massachusetts, and that was around 7 a.m. It's anyone's guess when the rest of the power will be restored, as repair crews continue to battle the wind.

The outages come following last night's storm. This morning the MBTA and commuter rail were navigating fallen trees on the tracks, and police responding to several reports of intersections without working lights.

Waltham was one of the least affected areas with "only" 1 percent of customers reporting no power according to Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency as of 7 a.m. By 10 a.m. the actual number had gone down to 373 before it jumped to 992 just before 11 a.m.

According to Waltham Fire Lt. Scott Perry, storm related calls started coming into 911 dispatch last night. The most common were calls about wires down, but they also got calls about a transformer fire and alarms going off. As of noon today they've received 60 calls for service. Perry said a number of branches and trees have come down on service lines prompting power outages.

Last night Eversource, the state's largest provider, said it was bracing for the storm, but a spokesperson told Patch it had no estimate on how long repairs might take. By 11:30 a.m. Eversource said it had restored power to some 95,000 customers across the state.

Folks reported trees down on Leslie Road, Boynton Street, Maple Street, Dorchester Street, Warren Street and Calvary Street. Check out another view of the tree that found its way atop of the home:

High winds in excess of 90 miles per hour last night along the coast, creating a "Bomb Cyclone" made things worse for folks on the Cape and the Islands, according to the National Weather Service.
