RSM Gallery is pleased to present Multiversed, featuring Jameel Radcliffe’s large-scale portrait paintings, Rebecca Greene’s cardboard sculpted masks and weavings, and Nygel Jones’ sculpturally framed collages and paintings. The creative dialogue among these three artists has been built over time, manifesting active collaborations and inspired influences. Radcliffe and Jones became friends in college. Greene and Radcliffe share a studio at the Boston Center for the Arts. Radcliffe’s paintings explore the transformative power of masks crafted from cardboard by Greene. Radcliffe invites friends and peers to pose in Greene’s masks and then paints their portraits. Inspired by the spiritual significance of masks in African and Caribbean Culture, and by the theatrical capacity of masks to heighten character traits, Radcliffe’s paintings celebrate their subjects with drama and playfulness. Greene has translated color block borders from Radcliffe’s paintings into totemic vertical woven sculptures. Jones creates dynamic sculptural framed assemblages influenced by sign-making, pop art, and industrial design. Jones has made framed forms in partnerships with both Greene and Radcliffe, shaping exclamatory new boundaries around each of their works to emphasize and expand the presence of each one.
Radcliffe, Greene, and Jones each draw from a rich well of collective creativity. When viewed both individually and collectively, their works reveal the distinct contributions of each artist and the intricate connections woven throughout their pieces. Across their varied styles and materials, all three move fluidly between abstraction and representation, employing Pop art imagery and energetic geometry to craft dynamic, multi-layered narratives.
