Waltham Firm Fined for Fuel Spill

The company failed to report a 100 gallon spill, according to state officials.

The Massachusetts Department of Environemental Protection has fined a Waltham-based firm for a 2012 fuel spill on Trapelo Road, according to press release.

The DEP has fined BP Reservoir Place $11,500 for failing to report a July 2012 fuel spill at 1601 Trapelo Rd. The 100-gallon spill occured during a refueling of a generator.

"A contractor working for the real estate investment trust located at 1601 Trapelo Road noted the spill. Workers then took steps to prevent the fuel from reaching the storm drain, but failed to report the spill to MassDEP within two hours, as required," the press release reads.

Three days after the spill, on July 31, the National Response Center notified the DEP of the spill. DEP inspectors visited the site and a manager told them it was a small, 5-gallon spill. Investigators later determined it was actually a 100-gallon spill.

The company has 45 days to submit a plan to train workers on how to deal with spills. The DEP has suspended its fine pending the company's completion of the report and not receiving any other disciplinary actions.
