The man killed in a Friday afternoon crash on I-95 northbound was a veteran city employee, according to Waltham Mayor Jeannette McCarthy.
"Eddie Fredericks was a great guy," McCarthy said.
Fredericks, 77, died on Friday after the car he was driving struck a center median. Police are investigating the crash but believe Fredericks fell ill immediately before the incident.
Fredericks was the city's Senior Plumbing & Gas Inspector.
