Waltham Middle School Threat Prompts Increased Police Presence

Police and school officials received word of an online threat made against McDevitt Middle School over the weekend.

WALTHAM, MA — Online threats made toward schools in the wake of a school shooting in Georgia that left four dead continue this week, this time at a Waltham middle school.

Local police said they are aware of a threat against McDevitt Middle School over the weekend, prompting an investigation and increased police presence on Monday.

"We are currently investigating that threat in partnership with federal law enforcement," Waltham police said. "We cannot currently comment further on the investigation itself at this time."

Police said an increased police presence will be seen at all schools on Monday, including McDevitt and Waltham High School. That will also continue throughout the week, police said.

In a letter from Superintendent Marisa Mendonsa on Sunday, she said the district was made aware of multiple threats shared via Snapchat regarding "a potential shooting" at McDevitt.

Mendonsa said they are implementing additional safety measures "to ensure that everyone feels secure and that our school environment remains safe."

No backpacks will be allowed on campus Monday as part of those new measures.
