Since 2020, the City of Waltham has experimented with rerouting motor vehicle traffic on Moody Street to enhance the pedestrian experience, offering a community space with outdoor dining & retail. The purpose of this study is to assess the feasibility and impacts of permanently re-configuring Moody Street to enhance pedestrian and cyclist accommodations while adjusting traffic patterns. This study assesses traffic impacts of three alternative options (see graphic below) through a robust traffic impact assessment, analyzing current local network traffic conditions and ensuring that diverted traffic can be accommodated effectively.

To conclude, 'Alternative 1', which maintains one-way northbound vehicular traffic with added bicycle accommodations, community space, and green infrastructure, was the recommended design by Nitsch for its ability to create a Moody Street with comfortable routes for walking and biking, space for people to gather, and green infrastructure that beautifies the corridor while improving stormwater quality.
